THE FLORES AND THE STONES

Photographs

IMultichannel sound installation

Potosí, Bolivia

A mountain becomes the symbol of a continent. Set in the Bolvian high plateau, Cerro Rico has been, since the arrival of the Spanish Crown, a never-ending source of wealth, while also being the tragic destiny of millions of miners who have lost their lives working in its depths over the last five hundred years.

Behind each dead miner there is a widow left to build a new destiny for herself. At that critical point in their lives, when they struggle with the grief caused by the loss of a loved one, they try to learn a trade, they try to get ahead in an environment which has always pushed them aside as they seek to come to terms with their feelings and learn to love again.
